Mindful moment… Why you should be a daydream believer

Marianne Power

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne is a book which tells us that we can have anything we want in life if we just believe.

Want to win the lottery? Sure thing! Just believe you will, and you will! Want George Clooney to knock on your bedroom door? Have total faith it will happen and there he'll be, in his boxers. And if by any chance you don't find yourself rich and married to George Clooney - then it's your fault. You just didn't believe hard enough!

This bit of magical thinking seems ridiculous - and cruel - to me, and yet the book has remained in the best-seller list for 10 years. So, why is that? I think it's because the book allows us to dream - something that gets knocked out of most of us after we're nine and announce we want to fly to the moon.

Dreams might not be realistic, but who cares? They give us hope and something to work for.

So, as the new school year starts, what are you dreaming of? I don't believe The Secret will deliver it - but I think that with faith and hard work, we can all do more than we think we can.
