Mindful moment… Lonely this Christmas?
'Tis the day before the day before Christmas and, for many of us, the hardest time of the year has begun.
For people who have suffered the loss of a loved one or who are estranged from their family, the feelings of loneliness, isolation and sadness can be overwhelming.
And even for those of us lucky to have families to share the day with, old hurts and resentments will doubtless rear their head, making Christmas the trickiest time of year to navigate.
So, what to do? Well, keeping expectations low helps. Accept that the festive period is going to be hard for you, that your buttons will get pressed and that tears will most likely be shed. Remember that most of us are not living a Christmas that looks like the one we see in those saccharine adverts.
Then with the pressure off, in between the disappointments you might find moments of joy. The feeling of warmth while watching television on the sofa. The minor miracle of a child who likes his toy. The realisation that it will all be over soon.
