Mindful moment… Leave expensive 'self-care' to Gwyneth

Self-care is a term doing the rounds in the wellness world that makes me cringe. A new take of the equally awful 'me time', it's a phrase not just applied to advocate valid mindful practices, but it's also being used to sell everything from bath oils and expensive candles to face masks.

On her controversial but enormously popular website, Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow is selling a self-care kit which includes cuticle oil and a moisturiser - and comes in at a hefty €350.

But while fancy oils are nice, candles too, I've realised that caring for yourself often means doing the mundane things such as opening your bills, making a healthy soup, going for a walk in the fresh air, and turning off Facebook so that you get an extra hour of sleep.

Not glamorous perhaps, but these everyday tasks that can be so easily avoided bring us peace of mind and body - without a price tag attached.

Then, you can celebrate with a nice bath or as much cuticle oil as Gwyneth can sell you.
