Mindful moment… How to pull yourself out of the gloom
When we feel down we tend to focus all our attention inwards. We attack ourselves in our heads for something we may have done wrong, we worry about the future, we have imaginary fights with people in our head.
One quick way to stop this loop is to open your eyes - physically and metaphorically - and take in what's around you. Where are you? What can you see? What is the light like?
Now wake up your other senses: are you warm? Cold? How does your body feel standing on the pavement or sitting on that comfortable chair? Now look for three things that you can be grateful for in your surroundings. Maybe it's the soft chair that you were given as a wedding present. Maybe it's the clear blue sky you can see through the window. Or the sweet song playing on the radio. Maybe it's the fact that you have a strong, fit body that is able to walk briskly.
Look for the small things that are good in your life right now this second. It doesn't matter how bad things are, you can find something to appreciate, if only for a second.
