Mindful moment… Dance like people ARE watching

'As kids, we grab any chance of fun'

Last weekend I was having a miserable time at a great party. All around me people were dancing, but even though I loved the music I didn't have the confidence to join in.

There were too many people I didn't know, I felt chunky in my jeans, I was sober...

I had lots of reasons keeping me on the edge until my friend said something that woke me up. "Stop wasting energy stopping things," she said, before spinning off for fun on the dance floor.

As I watched her bounce up and down, like a child, totally unselfconscious and delighted, I realised she was right. I spend a lot of energy stopping things. I think that many of us do.

As kids we grab any chance of fun, but then we grow up and we find many ways to turn down the chance to enjoy ourselves.

We are too self-conscious. Too wrapped up in imaginary problems. We become too serious.

Well, enough of all that. I think we may all be a lot happier if we stopped acting our age and started, on occasion, to act our shoe size. Which, in my case, is seven.
