Mindful moment… Be mindful of others, not just yourself
An old boss of mine died a couple of weeks ago and it has come of something as a shock. He was only 54.
I knew he'd been sick but I had no idea it was so serious. I did not get in touch when I heard he was unwell and I feel terrible about it. Now it's too late.
It's too late to tell him what a great colleague he was, how kind and encouraging. It's too late to tell him what a big difference he made to me as a young writer and how I would call my mother to repeat any praise he'd given me.
It's too late to tell him what a good man he was and how everyone around him learned from him.
So I have spent my morning picking up the phone and calling old friends and colleagues. I am calling them to say hello and that I think of them often.
They have sounded so happy to hear from me - "I've been meaning to call..." they say.
It's sad that it can take a death to make you mindful of the people around you - but sometimes it does.
