Paul McLoone worked hard to improve cancer services for patients - but little did he know he'd be using them too.

The 63-year-old from Ballyshannon was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006. He underwent surgery in Sligo General Hospital, where he had worked as a manager.

"By a strange quirk of fate I was a patient in the hospital where I'd commissioned a new oncology unit and day surgery ward."

In the years to come he beat cancer three times. He spoke out to thank the Irish Cancer Society, whose Daffodil Day is on Friday. See www.cancer.ie/daffodilday or text 'Daff' to 50300 to donate €4.
