High blood pressure, a risk factor for heart attack and stroke, was the number-one individual risk factor associated with global deaths in 2013, contributing to 10.4 million deaths around the world that year.
High blood pressure grew 39.9pc for women and 59pc for men.
You can take steps to prevent high blood pressure by:
* losing weight if you need to;
* reducing the amount of salt you eat;
* exercising regularly;
* eating a healthy diet;
* cutting back if you drink too much alcohol;
* cutting down on caffeine;
* stopping smoking.
