Bad habits back already? Forget losing and start gaining

Did you resolve to lose weight this new year? Did you bin the remains of the festive treats, pack salads for lunch and walk to work or go back to the gym? If that sounds familiar I have just one question left to ask: how long did it take for you to give it up and go back to your previous bad habits?

Resolving to lose weight is an admirable goal for the new year, but it's one that's very often unachievable in itself. In order to succeed you need to be properly motivated, and dieting just because it's January is rarely a strong enough reason to keep going.

Forget about losing inches and pounds and instead look at what you are gaining. Getting to a place where you are fit enough to have a good quality of life and feel good about yourself is a much better motivating goal.

It is an unfortunate reality that many Irish people struggle with basic physical tasks, be it walking up a flight of stairs, playing with their children or even having sex with their partner. So this year, instead of denying yourself on a diet, concentrate on looking after your body properly so it can do everything you need.

Now you have your reason, eat cleaner by reducing your sugar intake, eat foods with shorter shelf lives and ones that you have to cook and prepare yourself. Then, you have to move more. To get the best benefits, move fast enough until you get slightly out of breath but can still hold a conversation, no matter what form of exercise you are doing.

Yes it may be tough to start with, but you'll be amazed how quickly the changes happen!

Protein-rich Turkey stir fry

Stir frys are a great way to cook healthily and quickly. Anyone can do it! Turkey is a great lean source of protein too.

You will need:

1 tbsp of coconut oil

2 turkey breasts

1 green pepper

1 red pepper

1 red onion

1 large broccoli

Spice mix of choice

1) Heat the wok to a medium/high heat and add the coconut oil.

2) Cut the turkey into strips and fry for 10-15 mins until cooked through.

3) Dice your vegetables and add to wok once turkey is cooked through.

4) After approx 5 mins add your spice mix, shake the pan to mix and serve.

Use your feet. Your feet are the two greatest health tools that you can have. Life has become more and more sedentary, so wherever possible try to replace that sitting or driving with more time on your feet. Your joints and your waistline will thank you for it.

Restaurants in rural Ireland are getting better and better at offering cleaner, more innovative food. Recently I was lucky enough to eat in Monks Lane in Timolegue in West Cork. It offers healthy and delicious food, good service and a great atmosphere.

Aside from basic salad, it can be difficult in some areas to get healthy products when shopping. For a great selection of healthy foods and supplements, not to mention organic cleaning products, check out Irishbased company
