'You’re following filters and false photographs' - Karl Henry on why you should be wary of Snapchat and Instagram stars
Karl Henry has urged people to be cautious when following the health advice of their favourite social media stars on Snapchat and Instagram and said many do not have the qualifications or experience to offer responsible guidance.
The Operation Transformation trainer said it is important for people to place their trust in experienced professionals when it comes to their health and fitness and said it is easy to alter photographs and feign knowledge on social channels.
"Social media has been fantastic for health but there is an issue with qualification and with the advice that you follow," said Henry, speaking at INM event series Ireland's Fittest Company.
"You’re following filters, you’re following false photographs, you’re looking at photos that are photoshopped and made to look a certain way."
The popular fitness expert said many Irish people are taking the advice of social media stars, who might not have insurance to offer such guidance in areas of fitness and nutrition.
"If you are taking their advice, look at their experience. What kind of brand have they got? Have they got qualifications? Have they got insurance?
"Myself, I have obviously got the qualifications, but we also have public liability insurance for all the advice that we give."
"A lot of the bloggers don’t. They’re just blogging and putting it out there and people follow and it’s not always the advice to follow.
"Look for qualifications, look for experience and look for a reputable brand that you know," said Henry.
