Dry-roasted nuts and nut proteins may be the worst culprits when it comes to allergies, according to new research. This may explain why the problem is worse in Western countries like Ireland than in the East, where they tend to eat their nuts raw.
The news, which appeared in the Journal of Allergy and Clinicial Immunology, comes as recent figures show that the number of people in Ireland admitted to hospital suffering allergies to food, including nuts, is on the rise.
However, experts warn that if you have a history of nut allergies, you shouldn't assume that raw, boiled or fried nuts will be safe to eat. Those with an existing allergy should continue to take their normal action to prevent triggering a response.
