Luas driver who dropped 6 stone through hypnosis: ‘I was sceptical at first but I feel as though I’ve had a gastric band’
A Dublin man who once weighed more than 20 stone has credited hypnosis to his life-altering weight loss.
Luas driver Keith Devlin (28) dropped more than six stone in less than six months following three sessions with Irish hypnotist Jason O’Callaghan.
The Drimnagh native revealed that he had reached his wit’s end with his weight, which began to balloon in secondary school.
“I wasn’t a big child or anything. Really, my problems began in secondary school when I would come home from school and cook for myself. My parents both worked and I could make my own lunch and things like that. My portions were always mad.
“At my worst I was 20 stone and 5lbs,” said Keith.
In 2012, Keith was working as a ticket inspector on the Luas when he was let go with a chance of being rehired in three months time but felt his weight might impact that opportunity.
“At the time I was a Luas Ticket Inspector and I was let go. It was a year-long contract and they told us that they would be rehiring some of us in three months time.
“I was afraid that my weight might impact that
“I got up on the scales one morning and the dial went above 19 stone and back to zero. I knew then I had to do something.
“I Googled ‘weight loss’ and I saw that Jason O’Callaghan had a deal on Groupon for Hypnosis.
“It was €150 for three sessions and I thought ‘Well, if it doesn’t work at least nobody will know’,” Keith said.
The Dublin man said he was extremely sceptical before his sessions with Jason O’Callaghan, who is at the helm of the D4 Psychology and Hypnotherapy Clinic in Blackrock.
“I was so sceptical. When I got there I sat on a long couch, one that you’d imagine in a counsellor’s office,” he said.
Keith’s first session was focused on food and his second on exercise. During his third session Jason fitted his subconscious with a gastric band.
“During the first session, Jason asked me to close my eyes and within 15 minutes he had placed me in a hypnotic state. He gets into your subconscious and tells you to eat the correct food and be mindful of your portions. When I left the office I didn’t take much notice and thought that maybe it was a waste of time.
"In that first week I lost 13lbs,” said Keith.
“I returned to Jason for a second session which focused on exercise, and in my third session he gave me an imaginary gastric band.”
Keith revealed that during his third session he actually felt as though he was in a hospital being wheeled into theatre for surgery.
“It was so weird. I actually felt as though I was in the hospital and it sounds mad but I could smell that familiar hospital smell. Jason told me they were wheeling me into theatre and he told me the doctors were placing a band around my stomach. He told me I’d feel pain if I ate too much.
“To this day, if I overindulge or eat a huge portion of curry, that comes to mind and I’m not sure if that pain is in my head or if it’s real, but it is there,” said Keith.
Three months after visiting Jason and three stone down, Keith applied for a position as a Luas driver and got the job. He revealed that one of the best things about losing more than six stone has been the impact on his asthma, which he used to suffer from greatly when he was overweight.
“I used to be a terrible asthmatic and was on several inhalers. After losing the first bit of weight, I had a medical before starting my new job and the doctor was surprised to learn that I was an asthmatic. It was all set off by my weight and when I lost it the symptoms disappeared,” he said.
The Luas driver also revealed that being able to shop in high street shops has been a huge positive he attributes to losing weight.
“When I was big I used to have to order clothes online from the UK. It was difficult to find anything that fit me in Irish shops and that was so annoying and disheartening. My waist used to be 44inches and now it’s 34,” said Keith.
After keeping off the weight for more than three years, Keith became involved in an accident at work in which he injured his back.
“Last year I was in an accident with work and injured my back and I put on 2 stone. I was worried. I panicked and called Jason again. He hadn’t heard from me in over three years but I could feel my jeans getting tighter and I knew I had to do something. I’ve lost over a stone after three more sessions with him and I’m back on track,” said Keith.
Newlywed Keith, who married his wife Mary in June said that the thought of his future motivates him to keep the weight off.
“There was a point after I had lost the weight when my now wife gave me a hug. She told me it was the first time she had ever been able to put her arms around me completely. It was a funny moment,” he said.
“For me the thing that Jason provided me with was a motivation. Those three sessions completely changed my life and outlook,” said Keith.
"I really do think the magic formula is 80pc eating right and 20pc exercise."
