An Irish bus driver has shifted more than five stone after he was motivated by a weight loss advertisement pictured on a vehicle in front of him.

Anthony Beakhurst (40) from Clondalkin once weighed over 17 stone, but now is a trim 12st6lb after making a complete U-turn on his eating and fitness routine.

“I was driving a bus and a Motivation Weight Management ad appeared on the business in front of me – I took it as a sign,” said Anthony.

“I followed a healthy eating plan for six-months and completed some homework. I ate sensibly and walked every day.

“I lost 8lbs alone in my first week and the pattern of weight loss continued which just encouraged me.  The more I lost the better I felt. I also changed my exercise and began cycling,” he said.

The bus driver revealed that he had a particularly difficult time in school which contributed to his weight gain from an early age.

“I’d always felt I was different and struggled to fit in. Like many children, I suffered bullying at school and was often told I was gay.  I struggled greatly, never really excelled in one particular area,” he said.

“I had now developed this thinking that everybody was out to get me and so for the next 15 years I would constantly jump from job to job,” he said.

The 40-year-old who now bears an uncanny resemblance to Dermot O’Leary revealed that his low confidence affected his relationships.

“I also struggled to maintain a relationship for long. I usually drove away potential partners with my own insecurities and lack of trust for other people,” said Anthony.

Despite his struggle Anthony met his wife Deirdre who he credits as a huge support during his weight loss.

“She saw something in me and never gave up although we spent years apart.

“I was in other relationships during this time, but finally I gave in. Deirdre has always been a rock in my life and we are married over ten years with two beautiful children Sophie and Grace,” he said.

The bus driver revealed that shifting the weight has boosted his confidence tenfold and he loves the person he has become.

“I love the guy in the mirror and my wife and kids love the new me.  Your emotions rise from the pit of our stomach and I was constantly feeding this part of me instead of looking for help,” he said.
