A film about the cervical cancer scandal is due to go into production in the coming months.

The Letters will focus on the stories of three women affected by misdiagnosed smear tests and will star former Love/Hate star Mary Murray.

The film is being written and directed by filmmaker Robbie Walsh, who played Ian Kehoe in Fair City.

Speaking about the film, which will also feature John Connors, Murray said the premise of the film resonated with her.

“There’s a lot of women from all different walks of life put in this position that they never thought they’d be in and many of them were given weeks to live,” Mary said.

“It’s a frightening situation and it is frightening to think that you think you’re getting the all clear and you’re getting the wrong results from people.

“I don’t know how people can even contemplate what they’re going to do with their lives after being given this kind of information. It’s scary.”

She highlights brave women such as Vicky Phelan who have campaigned for justice for victims.

“Vicky was very brave, but I don’t know how many people want to put themselves out there and let everybody know their private situations,” she explains.

“When you’re in that situation you’ve enough to be dealing with without trying to tell everybody else around you and get involved in the press and all that, they have enough to deal with. I probably do know people that are dealing with it right now, but they haven’t told me.”

Mary will join fellow actresses Kathleen Yates and Emma Jane Carroll as one of three fictional women affected.

“I got involved because of all the coverage we’re hearing lately about it and just knowing that there’s so many stories out there that need to be told,” she said.

“I just think it would be great to be part of telling different people’s stories. There’s stories that we haven’t heard yet, or the things you just can’t quite imagine.

“This film revolves around three women and they are from very different walks of life. One woman, Mary, is dealing with her mother who has got Alzheimer’s and then another woman Cliona, she is a very career driven woman.

“Then this other character Sam, who I play. She has a husband who died by suicide due to being unemployed and she’s trying to raise two kids by herself.

“Just to think of these different lives and how they’re interrupted. I just think it would make for a beautiful film and just open people’s eyes up to what’s going on out there and what people have to deal with.”
