Ew! The reason why you should never drink out of glasses in your hotel room
A new report has suggested that “unsanitary” glasses in hotel rooms could pose a potential risk to visitors.
An investigation conducted by American news agency ABC15 analysed glasses from 15 different hotels Phoenix, Baltimore, Kansas City and Cincinnati and found that eleven of them did not remove glasses from the room ahead of a new visitor’s stay.
The analysis found that many of the hotels did not replace new glasses with clean ones, and some hotel staff even used towels or wipes to clean glasses before putting them back out for the next guest.
The failure to clean glasses in a dishwasher or sink after each use allows bacteria and viruses to thrive and pass from one guest to another.
The investigation found that one cleaner in a Cincinnati tended to the glasses with a cloth she had already used to wipe the bathroom floor, which allowed for the transfer of dangerous pathogens.
In another in Phoenix, housekeeping used a rag to wipe down glasses, while another used a potential harmful spray to clean glasses.
Speaking to ABC15, a Cincinnati Health Department representative said: “To take that towel that they used to clean up a bathroom floor where there's even more of a chance of there being pathogens in there … to use it on to wipe off glassware it's just like playing with a loaded gun."
Many of the hotels named in the investigation issued public apologies in the aftermath of the investigation and revealed that strives to improve the standard have been put in place.
