Dieting is tough enough without swallowing empty promises put forward as fact. Here are some diets tips we can all do without.

1 Sweet treats are forbidden

There is room in your diet for all kinds of food, even the ones you love.

Not allowing yourself have favourite foods can lead to binge eating and, ultimately, not sticking to your diet.

However, you need to control your total caloric intake.

2 You have to lose big to make a difference

Successful weight loss is long- term in goal and research shows small and sustained improvements have the biggest impact on your health.

3 What you eat is more important than how much you eat

Research shows the number of calories in your food is more important than where they come from.

4 If you hit the gym hard you can eat whatever you want

You might burn 500 calories in the gym, but having a 1000-calorie pizza afterwards means all that hard work was in vain.

5 Skipping meals makes you lose weight faster

People who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than those who don't, because they tend to binge eat later during the day.

6 Always avoid fast food

You can eat fast food but just keep the portions small and make sure you don't overdo it to the extent that Ronald McDonald is on first name terms with you!
