THE Today FM radio presenter reveals it was her radio anchor who inspired her to get her running shoes on.

The co-presenter on the Ray D’Arcy show tells Fit magazine that having began her career in radio as a runner on the Today FM show, she now is a regular runner once, the show goes off air.

“Ray is so fit,” she tells the magazine.   “He is someone I tried to copy a little bit by putting my exercise and fitness programme into my work day.

“ I try to run at lunchtime or directly after work,” the mum of one says.

She admits that exercising in the evening, is not for her.

“By 7.30 pm after the housework is done, the thoughts of going to a spinning class or something like that...I’d rather rip my toenails off.”

The upbeat mother of  Dara (6) manages  to fit in at least three 5k runs every week around her Glasnevin home and an eight-minute intense abs workout which she found on YouTube.

Working with health conscious Ray is certainly rubbing off on Mairead.  And she admits that  fruit, granola or porridge have taken over the coffee and Twirl bars for breakfast.

She says she has a relaxed but healthy diet, with lunch either consisting of soup or salad. Dinner is something that her and Dara can eat together, such as spaghetti Bolognese or cottage pie — “homemade cottage pie that is, none of that horse meat shite”, she laughs.

And Ray’s partner Jenny has got her into juicing. Seeing Jenny drink a vile looking concoction of fruit and vegetables and deciding to try it herself, she has never looked back.

Mairead now regularly makes herself a Jason Vale juice consisting of apple, spinach, avocado, pineapple, celery, and cucumber, poured over ice.

But it’s not all  juicing and abs workouts. She admits: “I still like to have my big glass of red wine at the weekend with my brie and crackers. Food is happiness to me.”
