Looking for a fitness challenge? We put Al Porter to the test

We all know that getting fit can be a challenge.

Often, it’s finding motivation that is the hardest part but having a plan and a goal to work towards are two of the best ways to stay on track- just ask Al Porter.

The comedian du jour has taken on an eight-week training program under the watchful eye of Karl Henry, one of Ireland’s most renowned personal trainers. Former Olympian and now successful food writer Derval O’Rourke is providing wholesome, nutritious and delicious recipes along the way.

“I did a lot of running in Tallaght growing up, though not voluntarily! I'm used to chasing men and running my mouth but I lead a very unfit lifestyle,” he says, adding “I might be thin enough to fit into Tubridy’s suits but my diet is closer to my mate Karl Spain’s and I never exercise.”

Al’s training program can be found each week on and can be adopted by anybody looking to get in shape. Al’s goal is the SPAR Fitlive Run Series this summer, which will be fantastic family day out and the perfect way to try out your newfound fitness prowess.

There is both a 5k and 10 k run or walk in Phoenix Park on July 15th. Expect a midsummer festival atmosphere with live music, street traders, plus goodie bags, t-shirts and refreshments for all those taking part.

Head along with the whole family and don’t forget your picnic basket- there’s a designated area to spread your blanket, kick back and enjoy the sunshine. The little ones can get in on the action by participating in the under 10’s 500m dash and then head over to the face painting area.

Karl, Derval and Irish Olympian Mick Clohisey will be at the Phoenix Park cheering on all the runners and walkers as they cross the finish line. You will, of course, get to see Al strut his stuff and if we’re lucky there’ll also be “a Christmas calendar like Daniel O’Donnell, but topless”, he says. Ahem.

If you’re looking for some fit-spiration check out the training programs devised by Karl here, where you will also get to read about the funny-man Al’s journey so far. All of Derval’s delicious, easy to prepare healthy recipe scan be found there too.

So, now you’re feeling motivated, head over to and register now for the SPAR Fitlive Run Series.
