We look at running shoes, reinforced tights and underclothes designed to keep you warm and protected in demanding conditions.

THE Xodus is strictly a true mud and off-road running shoe with its stiff and sturdy rock plate. The sole comes aggressive with soft vibram lugs pointing in all directions. Inside the shoe you get some nice features, like a lace pocket and midsole hugging lace tensioners. The bonded upper is very breathable and uses a solid heel cup to keep your heel protected. They have integrated a slightly wider than normal midsole which aids you with a bit of extra stability underfoot on the trail.

Hit: Extra sturdy, stiff and protected rock plate underfoot.

Knock: The upper has some crease sections that didn't suit my foot.

If you have a tendency for falling over now and then while trail running, then you might need some reinforced gear to survive the adventure. This is where Asics have developed trail specific running tights, with extra sturdy fabric around the shins.

The breathable panels at the back of the knees ensure you don't sweat up too much. But what might clinch your attention is the large zipper pockets, reflectivity and general comfort of these trail pants. Available in men's and women's styles in all sizes.

Pros: Heavyduty fabric covering the shins.

Cons: Warm tights, so best for winter running temperatures.

Verdict: Good design elements that protect you on the trail, but at a premium price for tights.

There is a likelihood that when the weather turns, it's almost better and certainly more fun to head out trail running. Keeping comfortable and warm on the trails keeps you going longer and further and this is where the Coldgear ® baselayer works really well. Under Armor have a unique Infrared fabric which helps retain your body heat and because of its core materials also keeps you dry by not absorbing sweat.

Pros: The fabric is very soft against the skin.

Cons: Price.

Verdict: For those who hate the cold, this top is an excellent option for sports during winter.
