Former Olympian Derval O’Rourke and Irish Independent fitness guru Karl Henry are among the names set to head up a new eight-week online fitness programme in preparation for the SPAR Fitlive Run this summer.

The free fitness programme, set to run on Fitlive.ie from May 22, will offer exercise tips, workouts and Karl Henry's running plans to those preparing for the 5km and 10km in Phoenix Park on July 15.

Comedian Al Porter will be closely following the plan, as he overhauls his diet and exercise regime ahead of the race, and his progress will be monitored weekly on Fitlive.ie and within Health & Living magazine in Monday’s Irish Independent.

Those who cannot make the Dublin leg of the SPAR Fitlive series, can put their fitness to the test during the second event, the Cork Airport Runway 5km on November 17.

Ahead of the programe’s launch on Fitlive.ie, Al Porter said he is hoping to release his own topless calendar following its completion

Speaking to Independent.ie he said: “I did a lot of running in Tallaght growing up, though not voluntarily! I'm used to chasing men and running my mouth but I lead a very unfit lifestyle. If I get a nice gym body expect a Christmas calendar like Daniel O’Donnell, but topless."

World champion Derval O’Rourke said the programme is geared towards fulfilling small achievable goals.

“The FitLive programme is perfect for those who want to improve their fitness levels, overhaul a poor diet, boost their mood or reach a specific goal over a two month period.

“From winning at the highest level in my sport, I know all too well of the importance of eating a wholesome meal. The food and recipes will fuel both your training and taste buds.”

Sales Director of SPAR Colin Donnelly said the company is proud of its dedication to athletes by means of sponsorship.

“The SPAR Fitlive programme is a natural fit for our brand. Health and wellbeing is a big focus for SPAR, having just launched our Better Choices initiative last year and we believe the SPAR FitLive Series is another great initiative for families because it helps to promote a healthy lifestyle in the home and community. We’ve very proud to be a part of this new venture in association with the Irish Independent.”

Those interested in improving their fitness and wellbeing can take part by registering on FitLive.ie. Early bird tickets for the SPAR FitLive series are also available from €15 here.
