New Irish model, Maria Gildea (20) will be heading to London in October to represent Ireland in the international competition to find the Spectacle Wearer of the Year for 2012.
Blonde Maria from Ardara in Co. Donegal was signed up by Assets Model Agency a number of weeks ago and has already done her first photoshoot, having won the Irish title.
She was originally spotted as having huge potential by staff at Specsavers in Letterkenny when she went in to their store for an eye check up.
The student, who is starting her third year in LYIT studying accountancy, marketing and management, has worn glasses for the past two years. “I realised that I probably needed glasses when I started college and I couldn’t see the lecture board properly. I then started driving and realised that I was a little bit short sighted”.
She loves wearing glasses. “The only thing I find difficult about them is when I’m wearing false eyelashes! When wearing make-up with glasses I tend to keep it simple .. instead of going for the whole smoky eye, I’ll go for one layer of eyeliner instead. Also, I make sure to have extra concealer with me to do an additional cover-up when I take my glasses off”
The model, who had only appeared in small charity fashion shows in her native Donegal until this breakthrough, is looking forward to her first trip to London to compete for the international title.
