Cork Airport race a runaway success
This year’s SPAR Fitlive Run Series at Cork Airport Runway was the biggest to date. This was the third year that Cork Airport hosted this 5k event in which more than 2,200 runners took part.
This hugely popular event is now the third largest running event in Cork and draws participants from around the country. The unique location, combined with the start time of midnight, makes this a special event that gives runners the rare opportunity to take to the tarmac on foot.
With the days turning that little bit colder and darker, we can all do with a little helping hand in keeping healthy and looking after our wellbeing. The SPAR Fitlive Run Series aims to do just that, with a team of specialists on hand to keep participants on track. Columnist and personal trainer Karl Henry has been on hand to guide runners through a series of exercises and physical preparation in the lead up to the event. On the night, Karl took the participants through their paces to ensure they were ready to cross the start line.
Olympians Derval O'Rourke and Mick Clohisey were proud ambassadors for this year’s event, with Derval providing plenty of inspiration and support in the lead up to the race with tips to get fit and some mouth-watering healthy recipes.
Cork Airport was buzzing on Friday night with RedFM providing the tunes to get everyone moving. Once the last flight landed, the Airport air space was closed down and runners got ready to take to the track. The winner was Kevin O'Leary and the female winner of the race was Brigita Lukste. With this year’s run the most successful to date, next year’s is set to be even bigger.
