Get the look: Blathnaid Treacy
Rips are one of the biggest trends in denim this summer. RTE's Blathnaid Treacy, presenter of Two Tube and, in a former life, a daughter of Biddy and Miley on Glenroe, carries off the trend to perfection here.
The key is to go dark with the denim, and keep everything else quite neat. Avoid anything in a pale-coloured wash - the rips tend to just look slightly dirty and messy. Go for dark khaki shades, as seen here, or even black. Topshop is doing the look best. And keep everything else fairly simple; a black top and leather jacket, seen here, pull it all together.
I'm going on holiday soon and am looking for denim cut-off shorts. I'm in my 30s, and I'm holidaying with family, so I don't want anything indecently short. I'm specifically looking for a happy medium between something that's not quite mid-thigh, and a pair that just offers bum coverage.
Reply: Based on Topshop's current offering of denim cut-offs, the 'Daisy Dukes' look has jumped the shark. Longer lengths seem to outnumber the shorter styles. Our favourite is what Topshop is calling the 'Mom' look - this seems to denote styles that include a slightly high waist; as in, the waistband doesn't sit on the hips and cut right through your tummy. So check Topshop stores; it has them in all colours. When it comes to denim cut-offs, worn-in washes and all sorts of fraying - things that we would normally avoid - are fine. You want cut-offs to look like something you've had for years.
