Take two wines
Pena de Pato Dao 2007
An example of value from Portugal; its signature red grape, Touriga Nacional, combines with Tinta Roriz (Spain’s Tempranillo) in a lively, gently oaked wine with smooth, dark fruit and a firm structure not always found at this price. Enjoy with red or white meats, from midweek through the weekend. 13pc alc. €6.99 (currently on offer) Available from Dunnes Stores
Tesco Finest Vacqueyras 2008
A huge concentration of black cherries, lifted with generous spice, in a ripe and rounded, juicy Grenache-driven wine, with great freshness. It’s a versatile food partner, worthy of any dinner table. For my money, take three of these instead of the comparable Châteauneuf du Pape. 13.5pc alc. €8 Available from Tesco
SOMETHING ELSE I ENJOYED...
Simone Joseph Syrah Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes 2008
A touch of class from northern Rhone and its signature red grape, Syrah; the light alcohol touch (12.5pc) allows for full expression of a beguiling floral perfume and fruit purity.
Fresh and elegant with lots of vibrant blackcurrant and cherry notes, hints of cloves, a savoury underpinning and a firm backbone. €14.99.
