There is an inevitability of jumping on the healthy bandwagon around this time of year, but I'm not opposed to it! It's a good time to refocus, plan and get excited about the year of cooking ahead.

Although I love my hearty comfort food dishes during these colder months, one thing that keeps my immune system in check is possibly my best habit - juicing.

I started this back when I was living at home, when my mom bought a juicer and a copy of Nigel Slater's brilliant juicing book, Thirst. I've graduated from my go-to apple, carrot and ginger juice up to using more hardcore juice ingredients like kale, beetroot and celery. Vegetable juices are a brilliant way to give your immune system a helping hand and these are three of my go-to juices that range from the beginner and the detoxer right up to a juice the slightly more advanced drinker.

Green Goblin Super Juice

Juices which are rich in green colour like this one are incredibly healthy, and if you prefer you can pare back the sweetness by reducing the amount of apple in their recipe.

You will need

2 green apples

1 large handful of baby leaf spinach

1 small handful of kale

2.5cm slice of cucumber

1 lime

Method

Place one of the apples in the shoot of the juicer and top with the spinach and kale leaves. Add in the other apple creating a leafy green sandwich which will allow you to get the most juice from them and process.

Then, add in the rest of the ingredients and continue to juice.

Pour the rich green liquid over a glass filled with ice and serve.

Super Cleansing Juice

One for the more advanced juicers — with apple and carrot as the base there is great sweetness and a powerful citrus twist from a small slice of lemon.

Serves 1

2 apples

1 carrot

1 slice of lemon, with rind

¼ yellow bell pepper

2.5cm slice of cucumber

¼ piece of celery

2.5cm slice of broccoli stem

2.5cm slice of raw beetroot

Slice all ingredients to fit the juicer’s shoot and process them through.

Serve the vibrant purple juice straight away.

Apple, Carrot and Ginger Juice

Even if you have never tried a juice before,

this one is bound to convince you that juices

with vegetables can be incredibly delicious!

Serves 1

2 apples

2 carrots

3cm slice of fresh ginger

Slice all ingredients to fit the juicer’s shoot and process them through.

Pour the frothy orange liquid over ice to serve.  If you want more heat from the ginger, double the amount in the ingredients.

LITTLE BLACK BOOK

I recently filmed with the inspirational and very glam Susan Jane White, journalist, self-confessed health food geek and author of The Extra Virgin Kitchen. The book, her first, did  spectacularly well last year and is set to continue converting the nation to dairy-, wheat- and sugar-free eating for some time to come. Stylishly illustrated, hilariously written and filled with doable and exciting new recipes for salads, suppers, soups and, most importantly, extra virgin treats, the book may be just the thing for those looking to take their cooking in a new direction this year. I was extremely curious as we made Raw Cacao Nib Toffee with ingredients like tahini, coconut oil and date syrup passing under my nose but having seen just how easy they were to make I can tell you I am now completely converted and looking forward to trying more of Susan’s recipes!
