Put to the test: Ready-made lasagne

Italian food is a perennial favourite among adults and children, and lasagne is definitely one of the staple dishes of this cuisine

If you don't have the time or know-how to make your own, there are many ready-made options to choose from.

Those tested here are all from supermarkets and are made using minced beef, except for Aldi's lasagne, which is made with pork.

All were blind-tasted and scores were given on taste and ingredients.

M&S beef lasagne, 400g

Price: €2.49 (€6.23 / Kg)

Verdict: This was deemed the tastiest and has the highest beef content at 26pc. It contains 17pc tomato sauce and the pasta is free-range egg pasta, plus this lasagne has no additives or preservatives. The beef had good flavour, the pasta tasted fresh and there wasn't too much bechamel sauce.

The price is third lowest or third highest, depending on your perspective, of those tasted here. It is made in the UK.

Score: 4 / 5

Tesco finest italian beef lasagne, 400g

Price: €3.65 (€9.13 / Kg)

Verdict: The Tesco Finest lasagne also has no "added artificial preservatives" and contains 26pc British beef, along with 26pc tomato sauce and free-range egg pasta. Very tasty, with the cheese nice and golden on top once cooked, there are chunks of tomato and identifiable pieces of carrot too. This is the dearest of the lot.

Score: 4 / 5

Supervalu Irish beef lasagne, 400g

Price: €3.49 or two for €6 (€8.73 or €7.50 / Kg)

Verdict: This one is made in Ireland with 21pc Irish beef and 30pc sauce. It contains mixed peppers and there was some debate by the tasters as to whether lasagne should contain vegetables, but all-in-all it got a thumbs up.

The pasta wasn't the best but the beef was tasty.

Score: 3.5 / 5

Aldi taste the world pork lasagne, 1kg

Price: €3.85 (€3.85 / Kg)

Verdict: Made with 24pc pork rather than beef, the main ingredient listed is water, and while it doesn't look fantastic, it does taste fine.

The pasta is soft, not sticky and you can really taste the cheese. If scores were given on price, this would win hands down.

Score: 3 / 5

Lidl trattoria alfredo lasagne bolognese, 1kg

Price: €3.85 (€3.85 / Kg)

Verdict: The same great price as Aldi's lasagne but this one didn't taste as good. Again the main ingredient is water, followed by 24pc minced beef.

Made in France, the pasta tasted a little salty and starchy and it was deemed somewhat "tasteless".

Score: 2.5 / 5
