Put to the test: Garlic bread

It may give you smelly breath but it is yummy! In fairness, it is pretty easy to make garlic bread from scratch at home but, if you want to buy it ready-made, what do the supermarkets have on offer?

We tested five garlic baguettes and found all of the bread to taste pretty much the same: light and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Nutritional information was also clear on all packaging. We scored on taste, garlic butter content, nutritional values and price.

Lidl trattoria alfredo garlic baguettes x2, 350g

Score: 4/5

Verdict: These baguettes had the lowest calories per 100g (309), the second lowest sugar content per 100g (0.9g) and at 15.8g, the lowest fat content per 100g too. And while the price lands in the middle of those tested, these were also tasty, with a strong garlic taste. The butter content is 19% with 3% garlic puree.

Price: €1.15 (€3.29/kg) .

Aldi casa barelli garlic baguettes x2, 350g

Score: 3.5/5

Verdict: The calorie content and fat in these baguettes came in the middle when compared to the others, but they have the most sugar at 2.6g per 100g. They aren't exactly bursting with garlic butter -- like most of the others -- but the herbal taste wasn't as strong here as we would like. A good price, though.

Price: €1.19 (€2.26/kg)

Tesco garlic baguette, 210g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: The most expensive of the lot, but the taste was good. For the extra cost, you get more garlic butter (22%) generously applied but, even so, the calorie, sugar and fat content come in the middle when compared with the others.

Price: €1.29 (€6.14/kg)

Supervalu garlic baguettes x2, 240g

Score: 3/5

Verdict: If you don't want a really strong garlic hit, you might prefer these. They were very buttery, which we liked, but it means that they contain the highest calories per 100g (364), the highest fat content per 100g (20g), and the second-highest sugar content at 2.5g per 100g.

Price: €1.29 (€3.79/kg)

Superquinn essentials garlic baguettes x2, 340g

Score: 2.5/5

Verdict: The cheapest of the five, these had the lowest sugar content at 0.7g per 100g. The 'garlic herb filling' is made with margarine, but for non-'butter purists' it's a good deal.

Price: €0.79 (€2.32 /kg)
