A leading retailer has defended its decision to sell 'poo-shaped' sweets in its stores.

The sweets are inspired by the 'poo emoji' and have sparked a reaction online.

The packets of cola-flavoured jellies, called “Sh*t happens”, are being sold for a limited run for €1.79 each.

Lidl Ireland has received “a number of queries” in relation to the product, but it said “no offence was intended”.

A spokesperson for Lidl Ireland said: “We are currently selling this product in stores for a limited period while stocks last, and the sweets retail for €1.79.”

“We have received some queries on our social media channel… no offence was intended in the sale of this emoji branded product.”
