Let Tesco's Finest spice up your day
Ras El Hanout has a bit of a reputation for being a pretty sexy little spice mix thanks to past inclusion of cantharides, a powder derived from the Spanish fly beetle, known for its aphrodisiac properties. Unfortunately for us, cantharides were banned for sale in Morocco a few years ago, presumably due to a population explosion.
However, the Moroccan spice blend is still delicious, minus the saucy spice. It still contains a fair whack of ingredients, often more than a dozen toasted and ground spices, including the likes of cardamom, clove, cinnamon and coriander.
However, you don't need to blend your own, the Tesco Finest range has introduced a ras el hanout spice mix perfect for our (lazy) Ottolenghi aspirations.
