Avoca 5 inch Iced Christmas Cake, €34.95

9/10

Avoca won gold at this year's Blas na hEireann awards for its traditional Christmas cake, which is decorated with icing stars. The cake itself is delightful-looking, and there's a nice balance of spice and fruit. The cake is expensive though.

Dunnes Simply Better Irish Top Iced All Butter Christmas Cake 370g, €6.49

9/10

If all you want is a little taste of Christmas cake, then this decorous offering made by Sam's Cookies in Wicklow is the one to choose. It also comes as cake bars and as a whole cake priced at €21.99. Our testers enjoyed the generous quantity of marzipan.

M&S Six Month Matured Sparkling Tree Christmas Cake, 907g, €12

7/10

This cake from M&S looks gorgeous and tastes fine, although our testers would have liked more depth of flavour. We were underwhelmed by the icing and the stingy quantity of marzipan. The price is keen.

SuperValu Signature Tastes Kevin Dundon's Traditional Fruit Cake, 1kg, €14

7/10

Our testers thought this cake tasted the best of the lot, but were disappointed at the lack of icing and marzipan. If you prefer an unadorned cake, then this is the one to go for.
