Ugh! Philip Boucher Hayes tucked into a cricket and mealworm burger on RTE last night
Throughout the past six weeks Philip Boucher Hayes has been exposing the horrible truth about Ireland’s favourite foods but as the nation looks towards our future, it seems creepy crawlies might one day become a viable dinner option in homes around the country.
The final episode of RTE’s What Are You Eating revisited the inefficiency of mass beef and pork production and suggested that the availability of meat will be rarer and more expensive in the future, which will prompt the nation to seek out protein alternatives such as insects.
As an experiment the presenter and his side-kick chef Hilary O’Hagan spent some time in the kitchen with live mealworms and crickets, which contain 70pc protein compared to just 20pc in chicken.
“There’s no questioning the nutritional value in crickets,” Boucher Hayes said as the pair whipped up the ingredients to a mealworm and cricket burger.
After a brief foray in the pan the viewers braced themselves as the presenter tucked into the insect offering.
“It’s nice. It’s really very tasty. There’s a bit of a crunch to it. I really like this. I’m sold,” he said.
For those thinking of trying Hilary’s recipe at home, the pair revealed that the finished product tasted much like falafel.
