Chef Darina Allen said that when she first met her daughter-in-law Rachel, she thought she was a "party girl".

The famous Ballymaloe chefs are particularly close due to their love of cooking and family ties.

And Rachel Allen said she clearly remembers when she first met legendary Darina at a course in the renowned cookery school.

"I came down here to do the cookery course when I was 18. Darina came rushing in to the demonstration class, that was in January 1990. I always remember her running wearing a long skirt which was flapping and flowing behind her," Rachel said.

Cookery maestro Darina said that Rachel was one of 40 students in her class and noted that she and another pal were "great party girls".

And when Darina recalled when one of Rachel's friends broke an ankle after high-jinks, Rachel admitted: "That was me!"

She added: "Do you know what you said to me, you said, 'In a funny way, you remind me of me when I was younger'."

Rachel is married to Darina's son Isaac and the pair are preparing for a huge Christmas family dinner at Ballymaloe, in east Cork.

Darina married into the Allen family after also going to learn from Myrtle Allen at Ballymaloe.

"It does interest and amuse people how history repeats itself," she said in an interview in Woman's Way. "I feel very fortunate our paths crossed in life."
