Danish restaurant Noma regains crown as the world's best
Danish restaurant Noma has regained its crown as the world's best.
The two Michelin star restaurant in Copenhagen pushed El Celler de Can Roca, in Girona, Spain, into second place in The World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards.
Noma, headed by chef René Redzepi, is famous for its focus on reinvented, seasonal Nordic cuisine.
The 45-seat restaurant in a dockside warehouse won the top award for three years from 2010 until 2012, with an exotic range of original dishes including sea urchin toast, beef tartar and ants, and pear and kale.
Yesterday in a glittering ceremony in London the restaurant officially returned to the top spot. "Redzepi's meticulous attention to detail, innovative approach to foraging and experimentation with fermentation - all driven by passion and a relentless curiosity - has once again brought his restaurant to the pinnacle," the organisers said.
It marks a swift comeback for the establishment which in 2013 suffered a hit to its reputation after 63 guests fell ill.
Organised annually by Restaurant Magazine, The World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards are voted for by over 900 industry experts.
Each member can cast seven votes, and at least three must recognise restaurants outside of their home regions.
Asia had seven restaurants on the list with its top eatery Nahm in Bangkok, Thailand, run by Australian chef David Thompson in 13th place while Gaggan, also in Bangkok, a modern Indian restaurant, was ranked 17th.
