He faces the wrath of restaurant critics every day, but for celebrity chef Neven Maguire it is his wife that he needs to impress the most.
The acclaimed chef and his wife, Amelda, make a formidable team at their restaurant in Blacklion, Co Cavan.
MacNean House is one of the busiest establishments in the country and Neven is rapidly building a TV career.
But despite the industry pressure, Neven said that he values his other half’s opinion above all else.
“My biggest critic would be Amelda, she’d be very honest with me – whether it’s my work, the books or television, in a nice way of course,” he said.
“It comes from the heart and you know I need that – honesty is so important. Your family will always be honest with you, whether you like it or not.”
Neven (40) said that despite his success, he makes sure to remember their humble beginnings.
“I never take it for granted, I remember the days when we’d only have five or 10 people in the restaurant,” he said. “Then I got my break (on RTE) and that changed things. But there were times when I worried about it and if we’d stay open.”
The chef, who is dad to twins Conor and Lucia (3) said that he hoped to spend more time at home with his family in the future and is learning to say ‘no’.
“I don’t want to be on the road as much,” he said. “I would say ‘Yes’ to everyone and that’s my downfall.”
