Back in the bling-tabulous days of the Celtic Tiger, this corner of Leeson Street and St Stephen's Green was the last place you'd go in search of scuzzy rock thrills. A bit like walking through Dublin 4 with a hurley over your shoulder or pitching into Shanahan's on the Green in short-shorts, it simply didn't feel right.

But it is here we find ourselves on a grey November afternoon, standing in the doorway of the latest incarnation of one of the capital's most famed music bars, Eamonn Dorans.

Truly, all is changed utterly. Replacing sleepy auld fellas' boozer Alfie Mulligans -- a pub you may not have noticed no matter how often you've walked Lower Leeson Street -- the new Eamonn Dorans is, like so much less in the culture nowadays, an unashamed 90s throwback. To one side are wide open spaces, stark wooden tables and chairs, on the other, lush leather couches.

Rock bars can sometimes cosh you over the noggin in their desire to establish exactly how edgy they are. Eamonn Dorans, though, takes a more subtle tack.

For sure, images of famous trade singers are scattered on the walls and some of the clientele look as if they've seen the business end of a tattoo needle.

But you could easily bunk down in a corner with a newspaper without ever being made to feel as if you've somehow blundered into the backstage area at a Sisters of Mercy concert.

We think that's what they call progress.
