'There are certain things that my father did that I won’t do as a father' - RTE presenter Daithí O'Sé
RTE star Daithi O Se has revealed his secret to parenting success.
Daithí , who presents The Afternoon Show with Maura Derrane, has a son, Míchéal Óg, with his wife Rita. Their father-son bond is influenced by the relationship that Daithí himself had with his own father.
"I base my relationship with my child on the relationship I had with my dad," Ó Sé told the RTE Guide.
"There are certain things that my father did that I won’t do as a father. Some things worked well and others didn’t. He gave me a love of music and football and that was good.
“What wasn’t so good was that he worked a lot.”
Daithi's father Maidhc Dainin O' Se died suddenly in 2013. A well-known musician and writer, Mr O Se was one of the most prolific writers in the Irish language and had published 19 books, some of which were translated into English.
His first book, 'A Thig Na Tit Orm', is well known to thousands of Leaving Cert students who study Irish.
His son Daithí, who also hosts the Rose of Tralee every year, says he makes sure that he comes home to his family every night.
"[My Dad] drove a truck during the day and played music at night. I’m very aware of that with Míchéal Óg and I want to spend as much time as possible with him.
"So when I get offers of working at weekends I make sure that I get home every night and after Christmas I plan to take things easier."
Rita's parents are flying over from America to join Daithí and Micheál Óg in Galway for Christmas.
"It's all very exciting for young Micheal as he will really appreciate Santa this year. I think I enjoy Christmas more as a parent than as a boy. If such a thing is possible," told the Sunday Independent a few weeks ago.
