Bill Linnane: Why is answering the phone an anxiety-provoking nightmare for my teenagers?

On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first call on his new invention, the telephone. The call was to his assistant Thomas Watson, to whom he said, “Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you.” Presumably Watson didn’t respond, so Bell WhatsApped him several times, rang him a few more, video-called him, sent him a DM on Twitter and some more messages on Facebook Messenger before getting in his car and driving around various local housing estates looking for Watson in an absolutely blind fury and when he finally found him, shouting at him for a full 10 minutes about answering the phone when it rings. Or maybe he didn’t.
