A woman in India who went into labour prematurely at 26 weeks gave birth to quintuplet girls at the weekend.

Manita Singh (25) had never had an ultrasound and she didn’t realise that she was carrying five tiny little girls.

The babies were born just over an hour and a half after Ms Singh was admitted to hospital. They each weigh just 1.5kg each, and they are now being cared for in the hospital’s neo-natal Intensive Care Unit.

Ms Singh and her husband Mahesh Singh (26), who lost a baby born prematurely in 2014, is overjoyed but doctors have warned her that her babies are not out of the woods yet.

Her doctor, Dr Tekam, said: “This is the first case in my career where I have delivered five babies through normal birth.

“We are very happy for the parents but the babies are under supervision as they all are premature.

“We are doing every bit to save them.”

Proud new dad Mahesh: “I am extremely grateful to God for blessing us with not one, but five children.

“We were heartbroken when we lost our first child, a son, immediately after birth two years ago. I believe God has compensated the loss. I only hope that they all survive and I can give them a wonderful life.”
