Mayo family welcomes the first baby girl born in more than 117 years
The arrival of a baby is always often a cause for celebration but one Irish family has an extra excuse after welcoming its first baby girl in more than a century.
Saoirse Grace May was born last Thursday and is the first female to join the Mayo family’s bloodline since 1898.
Saoirse’s parents Laurence and Leanne May from Ballinrobe Co. Mayo were surprised to welcome a baby girl into the May family which is dominated by men for 117 years.
Speaking to The Mayo News, new dad Laurence (34) said: “I checked the census records from 1901 and the last girl to be born in the family was 1898 when my grand aunt Anne was born. Anne would have been Saoirse’s great grand aunt.”
“My grandfather Laurence May was one of a family of six, two boys and four girls, the youngest of which was Anne May.”
The newest member of the family was born on August 6 in Galway University Hospital.
“We didn’t know it was going to be a girl, it was a surprise… There’s great excitement, everyone was delighted,” said Laurence.
“It’s funny because on Leanne’s side there’s a lot of girls. She has two sisters and one brother and three nieces.”
