Maura Derrane: Pregnancy is at the perfect time and I'm over the moon
RTE presenter Maura Derrane has described the news of her first pregnancy as the "perfect timing".
The 43-year-old confirmed she will give birth to her first child with her husband, Fine Gael TD John Deasy (inset), in June.
Maura, who co-hosts afternoon show Today with Daithi O Se, said she had reached a very comfortable time in her life and is looking forward to the new arrival.
"We're absolutely over the moon and it's a very exciting time," she said.
"It's perfect timing -- everything fell into place for us. I'm at a very happy, comfortable stage in my life.
"We finish up the second season of Today in March, so I will have a few months to get prepared.
"Work has been very busy lately, so it will be nice to have that time off."
The couple have been aware of the happy news for some time, but wanted to savour it with their families before making an announcement.
Inis Mor native Maura said she even held off sharing the news with friends and colleagues until she was through the early stages.
"We didn't tell anyone for a long time because it is a very private matter and I wasn't showing very much," she said.
"But I've started telling more and more people in the last week and everyone is delighted with us and said it is wonderful news."
Maura will be able to get parenting tips from her co-star Daithi who will become a dad for the first time when wife Rita Talty gives birth this March.
Today will wrap up a couple of weeks before Maura gives birth, and she said arrangements for the new season have yet to be made.
"I'm not sure what will happen with the new season, I haven't thought that far ahead," she told the Herald.
"But it's going really well and the ratings have been very good."
