'By working from home, I'm getting to see my kids grow up'

Being a mumtrepreneur isn't always about working around the kids. Mum-of-two Karen Burke (34), from Tullamore, Co Offaly, started making stationery ( as a soothing hobby, only for it to turn into a thriving business.

"I'd worked since my teens in retail management, but found myself out of work after experiencing anxiety attacks," she says.

"Being out of the workplace left me battling low self-esteem. I'd always done crafts and my GP suggested taking it up again as a hobby to improve my sense of self-worth.

"Making greeting cards and wedding stationery started as therapy but soon people started telling me I should go in to business.

"I set up the company a year ago last June and, even though it means working until 1am some nights, I've no regrets.

"My eldest, Olivia, is starting second year at school and I feel I missed a lot of things when she was little by being in full-time work.

"But Lucas is four, and at home and I'm getting the opportunity to see things I'd never have seen."
