Shoe maverick Manolo Blahnik awarded honorary degree
SPANISH shoe designer Manolo Blahnik CBE has been awarded an honorary degree by his local university, Bath Spa.
Blahnik will be presented with an honorary degree by the Vice-Chancellor of Bath Spa University on July 21 in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to design.
The Spanish-born designer, who resides in the Somerset city, started his eponymous shoe label in the 70s and counts Kate Moss, Olivia Palermo and January Jones among his celebrity fans. Perhaps his most famous fan of all however, is Sex and The City character Carrie Bradshaw, played by style maven Sarah Jessica Parker.
"It is a great honour for me to be associated with such a wonderful institution which is Bath Spa University. I really adore Bath and everything that is there" said Blahnik.
Famous for his pointy and skinny-heeled shoes (and seriously opposed to platformed soles) Blahnik has recently expanded his retail empire by partnering with Kurt Geiger in order to open a 300 sq ft concession in Harrods and a pop-up shop in Liberty.
Blahnik fell in love with Bath during a trip with US Vogue creative director Grace Coddington in 1983 and resides in a grand John Eveleigh town house.
Bath Spa's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Slade commented: "At Bath Spa University we foster an ethos of creativity, culture and enterprise, and we want our students to become global citizens, ready to make a difference. There can be no better inspiration for them than these internationally respected figures, and I am delighted to welcome such worthy recipients to our fellowship of honorary graduates."
