McAleese takes EU education role

FORMER President of Ireland Mary McAleese has been appointed as chairperson of a European Commission group on the modernisation of higher education.

The group will conduct a comprehensive three-year review of higher education across EU member states, with an initial focus on how best to achieve quality and excellence in teaching and learning.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn welcomed her appointment and said she was fantastically qualified, having been Reid Professor in Trinity College Dublin and the first female pro-vice chancellor of Queen's University.
