DEMAND for a college place in September has risen further.

The latest figure for CAO applications is 75,955 -- up from 71,648 after the main deadline.

It is broadly in line with the comparable figure for this time last year, when the CAO had recorded 76,210 applications.

The CAO allows for late applications, up to May 1, in certain cases, which accounts for the increase since the main February deadline.

Meanwhile, almost 40,000 applicants changed their mind about what course they want to do. Each year, applicants are given until July 1 to submit a change of mind.

Some applicants changed their mind more than once, and it is their final choice that is registered with the system.

For many, the agonising went on over the weekend with 7,500 applications from 5,800 applicants last Saturday and Sunday.

This year has seen a surge in demand for courses in the science and technology areas.
