"I FEAR THAT I COULD LOSE A GRANT''

Patrick Kavanagh (18), from Arklow, Co Wicklow, fears that he will lose his student grant in his final year if there is a capital-asset test.

The son of a dairy farmer is in the first year of a three-year course in Social and Community Studies at Carlow Institute of Technology.

"My parents have a farm of around 100 acres, and I am concerned that I would not get a grant if the land was taken into account.

"That would be totally unfair, because a farmer might have assets, but it does not mean that they are getting a good return.

"There are all sorts of factors to be taken into account such as the cost of running a farm.''
