Huge increase in parents buying second-hand books

Untidy pile of paperback books

Orla Bradshaw

THOUSANDS of parents are turning to a unique website in an effort to slash their schoolbook bill this summer, Foinse can reveal.

John O’ Neill, a secondary school teacher and founder of www.schoolbooks4ireland.ie, told Foinse that almost 400 people per week are signing up to his website, which allows people to buy and sell used primary school, secondary school and third level books to and from each other, free of charge.

O’ Neill, an economics teacher in the CBS, Kilkenny, decided to set up the non-profit site in an effort to ease the financial pressure on parents and students, something he sees in school on a daily basis:

“I started teaching towards the end of the Celtic Tiger years and I have seen the how quickly things have changed,” he said.

“I see pupils with no money for their lunch never mind expensive books.”

Ardú ollmhór ar líon na dtuismitheoirí a bhfuil fonn orthu leabhair athláimhe a cheannach

TÁ NA mílte dalta agus tuismitheoir ag dul i dtreo suíomh gréasáin uathúil an samhradh seo in iarracht costas na leabhar scoile a laghdú, is féidir le Foinse a nochtadh.

Dúirt John O’Neill, múinteoir meánscoile agus bunaitheoir an tsuímh www.schoolbooks4ireland.ie, go bhfuil beagnach 400 duine in aghaidh na seachtaine ag clárú lena shuíomh.

Tugann an suíomh an deis do dhaoine leabhair scoile agus ollscoile athláimhe a dhíol agus a cheannach óna chéile, saor in aisce.

Chinn O’Neill, múinteoir eacnamaíochta ag Scoil na mBráithre Críostaí i gCill Chainnigh, an suíomh neamhbhrabúsach seo a bhunú anuraidh in iarracht an brú airgeadais atá ar thuismitheoirí agus ar dhaltaí a laghdú, brú a fheiceann sé go laethúil agus é ar scoil.

“Thosaigh mé ag múineadh ag deireadh ré an tíogair cheiltigh agus mar sin, tá an t-athrú tapa a tháinig ar chúrsaí feicthe agam,” a dúirt sé.

“Feicim daltaí nach bhfuil airgead acu le lón a cheannach, gan trácht ar leabhair scoile chostasacha.”
