Education: Schooled by his mother at home until the age of nine. He attended Glenstal Abbey, the school attached to a monastery.
After a spell studying philosophy and literature in UCD, he became a monk at Glenstal at the age of 19 before becoming a student at the Sorbonne in Paris. Teaching career: Returned to Glenstal as a teacher and served as headmaster before becoming Abbot.
He has lectured at Boston University in Massachusetts.
