Baby boom by numbers

• The annual number of births has grown from 55,000 in 2000 to 75,000 in 2010.

• The Government recently announced that it will spend €1.5bn on new schools and extensions to cope with this baby boom.

• Under a five-year plan, 106 new primary schools, 43 secondary schools and eight special schools will be built.

• There will be extensions to 65 primary schools, 49 secondary schools and four special schools.
