Transition-year student Mark Caffrey said a "homework buddy" scheme helped him to adjust to life in his second-level school when he arrived at Ratoath College three years ago.

In first year, each student is assigned another pupil in the year and they consult each other over homework. "It is a very good way for students to get to know others in the year," says Mark.

Each class also has a cinneara, an older student who gives first-year students advice.

Mark, president of the Irish Secondary Students Union, said: "I was lucky that my school did everything to make us feel at home. Our school has 850 pupils so . . . even something simple like giving us a map of the school helped us to find our way round."
