300 more schools to receive funding for improvements

Katherine Donnelly, Education Editor

Another 386 schools are to receive funding to carry out vital improvement works during the summer break.

Almost €35m is being provided under the second round of the Summer Works Scheme, Education Minister Ruairi Quinn announced today.

Most of the projects involve upgrading toilets or roofs, in 280 primary and 106 post primary schools, with a total of 101,000 pupils.

In the first round of the scheme, announced in March, another 386 schools received funding for gas, electrical and mechanical works.

Today's announcement includes 33 schools that provided additional information after the first round and are now receiving money for gas, electrical or mechanical works,

Mr Quinn said the funding would be a welcome boost for the construction sector as it should support jobs in the communities in which these schools are situated.

It is estimated that 4,200 direct and 840 indirect construction jobs will be supported as a result of the scheme.

The rules of the scheme provide for schools to apply for funding to address necessary and immediate works.
